You know those days when you're rushing around trying to get from point A to point B as fast as you can? Today was such a day for me. I was zooming here, zooming there - it was a case of drop off this person, pick up this from the store, run back for an appointment, hurry hurry, and so on.
I was the essence of the White Rabbit in the Alice in Wonderland stories ... "I'm late, I'm late. For a very important date."
Urgently but carefully, I made my way through a string of traffic lights - sailing through the lights that were gloriously green and stymied by the lights that were repressively red. I was filled with impatience to complete my duties, to meet other peoples' expectations, to get to the next event.
At one of the red lights, I was paused next to a church. It was high noon and the church bells began ringing a beautiful tune. Traditionally, the noon bell is rung as a call to prayer and to spread good-will to everyone on Earth.
As I sat there carried away about the music, I was struck with a Joy so intense that I forgot my urgency, my errands, my time table. It was peaceful sitting there listening to the church bells.
When the light turned green, I didn't want to leave. "Please let me stay and listen," I thought. But the line of cars behind me were waiting and the other drivers were hurrying on their own missions for the day.
With great regret, I moved my car forward slowly. I didn't have the luxury of defying the Time and the flow of traffic, but I could carry the prayer of peace in my Soul. So I moved.
The song of the church bells faded as I progressed further. But I was uplifted. In my heart, I thanked them for the sweet Joy and moment of Peace they had given me, especially the reminder that all is unfolding in Divine Right Timing. And I carried the song with me for the rest of the journey.
